The way a shoe fastens matters as much as its size. The right closure means your child can put their shoes on without help, the fit stays secure through a full day of play, and mornings before school are quicker. Here's how the three most common closures on kids' shoes compare.
Quick comparison
| Velcro | Twist-lock | Lace-up | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy for kids to do alone | Yes — easiest | Yes — one turn | Only once they can tie laces |
| Fit adjustment | Good | Even, all-over tightening | Most precise |
| Stays fastened during play | Good | Very good — no laces to come undone | Good if double-knotted |
| Best ages | Toddlers to about 8 | About 5 to 14 | About 8 to 14 |
Velcro (hook-and-loop)
Velcro straps are the simplest closure for small children. Kids can open and close them on their own, which builds independence and saves time at the school gate. Choose shoes with wide straps that open fully so the foot slides in easily.
Best for: toddlers, kindergarten and early primary school. Try: Robolox and Iceberg (from UK 7C), Jumpers sneakers, and our velcro sandals.
Twist-lock (dial closure)
A twist-lock shoe has a dial that tightens a cable across the top of the foot with a single turn, and releases with a push or pull. It gives an even fit without laces that come undone mid-game, which makes it a strong choice for school sports and PE.
Best for: active kids from about age 5 who want the security of a sports shoe without tying laces. Try: Storm, Drone, Defender and Tremor.
Lace-up
Laces give the most adjustable fit because they can be tightened at each eyelet. They suit older children who can tie their own shoes and who want the look of a classic sneaker or running shoe.
Best for: kids aged about 8 and up. Try: Addiction and Infinity sneakers, or Dear and Explorer 2 sports shoes.
Which should you choose?
- Ages 2–5: velcro.
- Ages 5–8: velcro or twist-lock — twist-lock if your child is very active.
- Ages 8–14: twist-lock for sports and busy school mornings, lace-up if your child prefers them.
Whatever the closure, size comes first: measure your child's foot in cm and check the G&D size guide before ordering.
