School shoes do more work than any other pair your child owns: six or more hours a day, PE classes, playground games and the walk or bus ride in between. Use this checklist to pick a pair that's comfortable all day and lasts the term.
1. Get the size right first
Measure your child's foot length in cm (here's how) and match it to the size chart. If your child is between sizes, go up one. Avoid buying two sizes up “to grow into” — shoes that are too big slip at the heel and cause tripping.
2. Check the sole
- Anti-slip rubber outsole for corridors, stairs and wet playgrounds.
- Flexible at the ball of the foot — the shoe should bend where the toes bend.
- Non-marking if your school has indoor courts.
3. Look for cushioning
A cushioned insole and midsole absorb impact on hard school floors and during PE. Memory-foam or EVA insoles help with comfort across a full school day.
4. Pick a closure your child can manage

5. Choose a durable, easy-clean upper
Synthetic uppers resist scuffs and wipe clean with a damp cloth — useful during the monsoon. Avoid machine washing, which can damage the glue and sole.
6. Check your school's rules
Many schools specify a colour (often black or white) for uniform days and sports shoes for PE. Check before you buy so one pair can cover as many days as possible.
7. Plan for growth
Re-measure every 2–3 months. Many parents keep one pair for school and a second pair for PE or play, which also lets each pair dry out between wears.
